Computers, televisions headed to recycle bin

Electronics manufacturers will soon begin funding a recycling program for televisions and computers under a new law signed by Gov. M. Jodi Rell over the weekend. The Department of Environmental Protection is creating a program to recycle devices with screens of four inches or larger, with the aim of reducing the environmental impact of lead, mercury and other hazardous materials. The law specifically exempts smaller devices, including cell phones, PDAs and calculators. The DEP will begin registering and collecting annual fees from manufacturers of the devices at the start of 2009.
