Comcast said it has grown its network of Xfinity WiFi hotspots in New England to more than 300,000.
The hotspots allow Comcast subscribers to access the Internet from other locations by typing in their log-in credentials on a computer or mobile device. The service means customers don’t have to consume data from their wireless plan or link up to a public network at a coffee shop or elsewhere.
There are thousands of hotspots concentrated in the Greater Hartford area, according to a map on Comcast’s website. Competitor Time Warner Cable also appears to have thousands of Connecticut hotspots. Cox Communications lists approximately 30 on its website.
Comcast said last year that customers with a newer type of router in their home are actually providing a hotspot to nearby gadget users. But the company said that doesn’t affect Internet speeds, prices or security experienced by the customer.
