CNG expects customer bills to increase $7

CORRECTION: This article has been modified to reflect that the $6.75 increase isn’t solely from the natural gas expansion plans.

Connecticut Natural Gas is telling its customers that the average residential bill will increase $6.75 monthly if regulators approve a plan to add 100,000 customers.

The natural gas expansion is part of Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s comprehensive energy strategy that includes all three distribution companies – CNG, Southern Connecticut Gas, Yankee Gas – adding 300,000 customers total. Implementation is expected to cost $7 billion, with the bulk of the spending coming from residential customer switching their heating equipment.

CNG filed for a $20 million rate increase in July to cover its portion of the expansion plan, along with other expenses. The utility has been circulating letters to its customers detailing the impact of the request if approved.

If approved, the $6.75 per average bill increase would start in January. That average is based on whole-year use for residential customers. Commercial and industrial customers that use more natural gas should expect larger increases.
