Berlin electric utility Connecticut Light & Power is urging its ratepayers and all state businesses to be prepared for large-scale weather events and power outages, as hurricane season has started and September is National Preparedness Month.
Among other things, CL&P advises customers keep a well-stocked storm kit and an emergency plan, fully charge all wireless communication devices in advance of severe weather, and follow CL&P on Twitter and Facebook for outage updates.
CL&P was criticized heavily in 2011 for its response to two storms that each left more than 675,000 customers without power, some for up to 11 days. Its storm response and outage restoration had improved since, and the utility said it is installing stronger poles, wires, and transformers to protect against outages.
In an emergency, CL&P said everyone should treat all downed wires as live and dangerous, stay at least 10 feet away, and call 911.
