Berlin utility Connecticut Light & Power has developed a hurricane preparedness plan and urges its customers to have one as well.
A hurricane has never impacted CL&P customers, but the service area had three new misses in 1971, 1985 and 1991. Since the National Weather Service designated this week as National Hurricane Preparedness Week, CL&P wanted its customers to be aware that such as event is possible.
“Customers frequently say it has been 20 years since (Hurricane) Bob and ask me if it could happen again,” said Al Roy, CL&P’s manager of emergency management. “We never predict hurricanes or any other storms. Â Our job is to be ready no matter what the weather is.”
The CL&P hurricane plan involves being in contact with state and emergency management officials to keep all effort coordinated. For customers, CL&P recommends a storm kit including water, food, a radio, batteries, flashlights, first-aid kits and prescription medication.
For the six-month Atlantic hurricane season running from June to November, the National Weather Service predicts six to 10 hurricanes.
