CL&P to launch smart-meter pilot

Connecticut Light & Power Co. will launch a pilot program this summer to test customer interest and response to time-based electric rates.

CL&P’s Plan-It Wise energy program will install about 3,000 smart electricity meters at homes, businesses and industrial sites to measure response. Smart meters can identify electricity consumption in more detail than conventional meters and automatically send that information back to the utility for monitoring and billing.

The electric utility has hired Accenture, a New York management, technology services and outsourcing company, to analyze results of the pilot that runs from June to November.

Approved by the state Department of Public Utility Control, CL&P said the largest smart-metering pilot of its kind in North America will enable the utility to find ways to satisfy Connecticut requirements for lowering the state’s peak energy demand.
