CL&P seeks $210M rate increase

Connecticut Light & Power Co. is asking state regulators to boost its electricity distribution rates by $210 million, which would wipe out a planned rate decrease.

Connecticut’s largest utility notified the Department of Public Utility Control that it plans to file the two-year request next month.

The proposal calls for CL&P to begin collecting on the higher rates on Jan. 1, 2011, the same day that a $210 million, or 5 percent, rate decrease is set to take effect. That would mean that consumers’ bills wouldn’t change.

The Hartford utility says it needs the extra money to continue building, maintaining and operating its distribution system.
