CL&P drops $30M on summer preparations

Berlin-based electric utility Connecticut Light & Power has invested $30 million in upgrading its transmission and distribution system to prepare for the heavy summer demand.

The upgrades are designed to keep the power flowing to all corners of CL&P’s territory even when the system is strained as temperatures rise. A primary cause of the summer peak is the increased electricity draw from air conditioners.

The $30 million in upgrades includes servicing underground system for urban areas, surveying transmission lines and substations, and boosting electrical circuit capacity.

To cut down on power demand and decrease their bills, CL&P suggests ratepayers keep air conditioners in the shade, use blinds over windows to block sunlight, set thermostats at moderate temperatures, cooking outside, and service freezers and refrigerators.
