CL&P awarding $1,000 eco grants

Connecticut Light & Power has set an Oct. 15 deadline for grant applications to fund environmental initiatives within its service territory.

CL&P’s Environmental Community Grant Program funds community and grassroots environmental projects often overlooked by large-grant programs.

Grants up to $1,000 will be awarded in December. Eligible projects, such as improving a local wildlife habitat or starting and maintaining a recycling program, help protect or preserve the environment, or teach others the value of doing so.

Recent winners were The Friendship School, a magnet school serving Waterford and New London, which is using its CL&P grant to make improvements to their outdoor classroom; High Hopes Achievement After School Program at Hartford Public High School, for work developing a 2,000-square-foot bird and butterfly garden at the school; and the New Britain Youth Museum at Hungerford Park in Berlin, for materials as part of an Eagle Scout project to clean up the garden courtyard at the museum.

Applications must be from organizations within CL&P’s service territory and should be for initiatives that can be fully funded by the grant without using other funding sources.  Projects using funds from other outside sources will not be considered.
