South Windsor manufacturer ClearEdge Power has installed a 400 kilowatt fuel cell at the Science Building at Western Connecticut State University.
WCSU estimates the fuel cell will save the university $25,000 annually in electricity and heating costs. The university received a grant from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act arranged through the state Clean Energy Finance and Investment Authority.
Financial terms were not disclosed.
The WCSU fuel cell is similar to ClearEdge model installed at Eastern Connecticut State University and part of a clean energy program that also installed fuel cells at Southern and Central Connecticut State Universities, although those institutions opted for larger models from Danbury manufacturer FuelCell Energy.
