The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will decontaminate and cleanup the site of a former aluminum smelting facility in Newtown beginning this week and is set to be completed in two months.
The Batchelder property at 46a Swamp Road contains contaminated metals and imposes safety hazards on the property but does not present health risks to the surrounding area. However the site is surrounded by barbed wire and no trespassing signs warning residents to keep out.
Safety hazards present at the location include lead-contaminated soil, asbestos, old machinery, debris piles, and broken glass.
Town officials are hopeful that once the cleanup is completed the site will be available for future use.
