City product quality control startup aims to expand nationally

New Haven analytical pharmacy startup Valisure said it is teaming up with a national drug distributor in an effort to expand the reach of its quality-tested medicines.

Ohio-based Premier Rx, a pharmacist-owned independent pharmaceutical wholesale drug distributor, will be the first national wholesale supplier of Valisure’s chemically certified medications and over-the-counter products, according to Valisure.

Valisure made international news two years ago when it discovered a potential carcinogen in the popular heartburn drug Zantac, leading to worldwide recalls.

The company got its start in 2015, in response to rising concerns about the quality of generic drugs and U.S. dependence on overseas drug manufacturing. It opened a lab in Science Park and began selling  quality-checked drugs online in 2017.

Using proprietary technology, Valisure tests every batch of medication it sells and issues a certificate of analysis listing important chemical properties of the samples analyzed.

“Valisure’s core value of quality assurance in medication is also our core competency, and we are excited to be able to bring this capability to Premier Rx’s clients,” Valisure CEO David Light said in a statement.

“We believe that our partnership with Premier Rx represents an opportunity for Valisure to expand our reach and provide more healthcare systems, doctors, and ultimately patients with access to increased quality, safety and transparency in medications,” he added.

The company also announced a partnership with Cabinet, a New York health care company, to test hand sanitizers and over-the-counter products.

Several brands of hand sanitizers were recalled in the U.S. this past summer for containing methanol, a chemical which can be toxic when absorbed through the skin.
