City of Bristol, Environmental Learning Centers of CT purchase 64 acres for open space

The city of Bristol has announced it has purchased 63.9 acres known as the Pigeon Hill property in an effort to preserve open space.

The city completed the land purchase with the town of Burlington and Environmental Learning Centers of Connecticut (ELCCT) for $2.1 million. The purchase was made possible via an $850,800 state open space grant from the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. The remaining purchase price was covered by ELCCT and various fundraisers.

The city said the property, located near the Bristol/Burlington line, includes 45 acres of mature, mixed hardwood forest, nine acres of fields and a pond.

“The acquisition of this property will allow this land to be used for passive recreation, opportunities to educate the public on the importance of wetlands and native plants and native wildlife for generations to come,” Bristol Mayor Jeffrey Caggiano said in a statement.

The property will remain closed to the public while the city takes measures to provide for safe visitation.
