Cigna’s 2Q profits up 13 percent on premium growth

Bloomfield health insurer Cigna Corp.’s second-quarter profits increased by $68 million on premium and fee growth in its core business and the addition of new customers.

Net income for the quarter ended June 30 was $573 million, or 2.12 per diluted share, up from $505 million, or $1.76.

Revenue grew $750 million, or 9.4 percent, to $8.73 billion. The growth was mostly in premiums and fees from Cigna’s commercial and government segment. Mail-order pharmacy revenue also grew by $110 million.

Cigna has added 135,000 medical customers over the past year, excluding its limited benefits business, which it phased out at the end of 2013 due to Affordable Care Act regulations.
