Bloomfield health insurer Cigna is boosting its efforts to combat the opioid epidemic through an online marketing campaign featuring nationally known celebrities.
The new campaign eyes “pain plan” management to encourage discussions surrounding safe opioid use and other pain management options. Cigna has also developed an online tool on its “Help with Pain” website, allowing people to determine whether a prescription is an opioid or not.
Cigna has partnered with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, celebrity chef Rocco DiSpirito and blogger Rachel Moore to promote the national campaign.
About 2.5 million Americans suffer from opioid substance abuse and one in five people are at increased risk of long-term use after a 10-day prescription, according to Cigna.
“Both acute and chronic pain can be debilitating, and we understand the real challenges people face when trying to cope with their pain,” said Dr. Douglas Nemecek, chief medical officer for behavioral health at Cigna. “We want to help people better understand pain, how it manifests, and ultimately, how to manage it safely and effectively, immediately and over time.
