Bloomfield health insurer Cigna Corp. plans to lay off an undisclosed number of employees starting in May as it shifts its accounting functions to India, The Journal Inquirer reports, citing employees and a company official.
Cigna employees, who did not wish to be identified, estimated that 50 to 60 of the company’s 3,900 Connecticut employees could lose their jobs as the insurance giant farms out accounting work to a subcontractor in New Delhi.
Cigna spokesman Joseph M. Mondy confirmed Wednesday that the reorganization “is expected to impact some positions in Bloomfield during the next three years,” adding that the total number “will be far fewer than 100.”
In November, Cigna signed a joint-venture agreement with Indian conglomerate TTK Group to sell a range of health, wellness and insurance products across India as part of its ongoing international expansion.
