The Cigna Foundation awarded a $100,000 World of Difference grant to Community Solutions to improve the health and sense of security for residents living in Northeast Hartford.
The grant will support Community Solutions as the organization works with a broad base of local partners and residents to improve economic security, education and neighborhood safety.
In addition to the grant, Cigna’s professional staff is committing countless hours to Community Solutions to help improve life for Northeast Hartford residents.

AT&T Connecticut granted a $10,000 donation to Leadership Greater Hartford in support of the Summer Nexus youth leadership program. Leadership Greater Hartford’s mission is to develop, connect and inspire diverse leaders to build strong and vibrant communities.
Summer Nexus annually enlists 18 to 20 urban and suburban high school students for a week-long, intensive leadership development experience. Students, representing diverse races, nationalities and economic backgrounds, engage in leadership training through interactive workshops and service learning opportunities.

Community Mental Health Affiliates was awarded $310,000 in state bond funding to partner with Farrell Treatment Center to advance both agencies’ information technology capacity.
The funds will help CMHA implement an improved backup and recovery system, and support Farrell Treatment Center’s electronic health record development.
CMHA, headquartered in New Britain, is a private nonprofit provider of behavioral health and substance abuse treatment that provides treatment for more than 6,000 children, adolescents and adults each year.

Cox Communications announced a two-year extension of its participation in Connect2Compete, the broadband adoption program that offers discounted high-speed Internet service to low-income families.
Cox pledged $15 million in support of broadband adoption initiatives through 2016, which will help continue to connect Connecticut families to the Internet. The program launched in Connecticut at the beginning of the 2013-14 school year. Discounted Internet service via Connect2Compete is available to families with children who qualify for the National School Lunch program.

The YMCA of Greater Hartford has received a $300,000 grant from the SBM Charitable Foundation in support of the Y-BELL Power Scholars Academy and the Hip & Fit Afterschool Program at the Anna E. Norris Elementary School in East Hartford. The Hip & Fit Program engages students in grades 1 through 6, the majority of whom have been identified as students needing academic intervention.
By the end of the program, students will learn and demonstrate: healthy eating habits; increased physical endurance, strength, flexibility, and balance; habits to maintain proper hydration; stress reduction techniques; increased academic proficiency; conflict resolution skills; and increased leadership skills.
