An executive with a Fairfield County technology firm has turned to non-equity crowdfunding to help launch a product of his own — a low-cost gunshot detection system for school and workplace shootings.
Robert Hotaling’s startup Verbi Security is trying to raise $700,000 on Kickstarter to develop its product, which is being pitched as a cheaper version of police and military-grade systems that can sell for $1.5 million or more.
Verbi Security would include an acoustic sensor linked up to a security server that alerts police as well as administrators about a gunshot and its location through a mobile app, which the company said could even allow school officials to lock doors remotely.
Hotaling is head of mobile solutions at Walker Digital Table Systems in Stamford. Walker, headed by Priceline.com founder Jay Walker, has developed a RFID-enabled baccarat table for casinos, among other products and startups.
