Middletown-based Community Health Center Inc. (CHC) says it’s scored more than $3.2 million in federal funding to expand its postgraduate nurse practitioner residency program.
CHC announced Tuesday it will receive the funding over four years from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services based in Maryland. It’s one of 36 organizations that will receive funding under HRSA’s initiative to create and develop existing nurse practitioner residency training programs in the U.S.
CHC said it plans to use the funding to expand current programming to also include adult/gerontology and pediatric nurse practitioners.
The money will also be leveraged to increase the size of its psychiatric/mental health nurse practitioner residency training program, in addition to supporting its development of an academic partnership with the Yale University School of Nursing, officials said.
It will also help CHC’s postgraduate program “meet the need for expert primary care providers, now and in the future and will also help us incorporate training in areas such as the use of telehealth, treating opioid use disorder and addressing maternal mortality,” said program director Kerry Bamrick.
Established in 2007, a total of 86 individuals have graduated from CHC’s full-time program, which spans over a year. More than 90 percent are currently practicing as primary care providers, according to CHC.
