Channel 3 Kids Camp considers sale of Andover property amid financial crunch

Months after the cancellation of this year’s summer program, nonprofit Channel 3 Kids Camp this week said it’s exploring partnerships or the possible sale of its camp and other assets.

Channel 3 Kids Camp Board of Directors Chairman Samuel Broomer said in a statement Wednesday that the group’s operating model, which gets 50% of its revenue from fundraising, is not sustainable going forward.

Channel 3 Kids Camp is an educational and recreation nonprofit for children with a camp in Andover.

“As a result, we are actively exploring opportunities with charitable and commercial organizations — as well as interested individuals — who may be interested in partnering with the Camp or potentially purchasing the assets of the camp and obtaining control of the entity,” Broomer said.

In his statement, Broomer said naming opportunities, seats on the board and other accommodations could be up for grabs for interested parties.

“The Board’s desire, if at all possible, is to have the land and facilities remain a children’s camp for the foreseeable future,” Broomer said.

In June, camp officials said there wouldn’t be summer programming in 2022 following the departure of the camp’s former Executive Director David Meizels. The camp’s website is no longer active.

“Since the COVID shutdown and the smaller camp reopening a year ago, these have been extremely challenging times for us, culminating in our necessary but unfortunate decision to cancel the 2022 camp season due to financial and operational factors.

Broomer said those interested in partnerships or other opportunities can reach camp officials by emailing Summercamp22@channel3kidscamp.org.

In 2019, the camp’s parent nonprofit organization reported a $614,304 deficit on $1.7 million in revenue, according to its most recently available tax filing. That year the nonprofit also reported 144 employees and 600 volunteers.
