CBIA backs mostly CT GOP slate

The Connecticut Business & Industry Association Thursday endorsed a slate of General Assembly candidates, and overwhelmingly the state’s chief business lobby threw its weight behind Republican office seekers.

Citing this November’s upcoming election as a “historic turning point,” for the state, CBIA endorsed 79 candidates running for the state Senate and House.

The endorsements included 58 Republican nominees and 21 Democratic candidates, including a mix of incumbents and freshmen office seekers.

For the state Senate, the CBIA endorsed 13 Republicans and 9 Democrats. For the House, CBIA threw its weight behind 45 republicans and 12 democrats.

CBIA spokeswoman Nancy Andrews said the lobby traditionally endorses candidates running for state legislative seats. But CBIA does not endorse candidates running for constitutional office.

“Much of our economic future depends on what priorities our next governor and our new state legislators bring to the Capitol after the elections this fall,” CBIA President/CEO John R. Rathgeber said in a statement. “Connecticut clearly needs a change in policy direction. We need lawmakers who are committed to restoring business confidence in our state so that employers will invest, grow, and create jobs here. And we need leaders who are committed to solving our fiscal problems by making fundamental changes to reduce the size and cost of state government.”
