Farmington heating and cooling manufacturer Carrier Corp. has reached an agreement with the Vatican to provide an efficient and quiet heating and cooling system to preserve the artist Michelangelo’s masterpieces against deterioration on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
The agreement calls for Carrier to replace its old system installed in the early 1990s with a system with twice the efficiency, three times the capacity, and noise reduction technology.
The system is designed to minimize the air flows around Michelangelo’s frescoes – the paintings on the ceiling – to keep them from deteriorating.
Carrier is a subsidiary of Hartford conglomerate United Technologies Corp.
In addition to the Carrier deal, the Vatican struck an agreement with UTC to deploy more products from the conglomerate inside the Vatican Museums, including HVAC, elevators, escalators, fire detectection and suppression, video surveillance, and related software solutions.
