Carrier forms S. American HVAC partnership

Farmington heating and cooling manufacturer Carrier Corp. aims to sell more of its products in South America through a partnership with a Chinese distributor.

China-based Midea Group and Carrier announced a joint venture on Wednesday to manufacture and distribute heating, air conditioning and ventilation products in Brazil, Argentina and Chile.

The venture — owned 51 percent by Midea, the rest by Carrier — combines Carrier’s existing HVAC operations in the three countries with Midea’s distribution entity, Midea do Brazil.

Carrier has joint ventures similar to this as part of its global sales effort. For example, it’s Mexico sales and distribution is handled by a joint venture with distributor Watsco Inc., of Coconut Grove, Fla.

Carrier is expanding its global brand into South American in other way. In August, the company trained Brazilian HVAC engineers and technicians in efficient and environmental design methods in advance of the country hosting soccer’s 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics.
