Capital Comm. College awarded $1M to bridge computer-science gap

Hartford’s Capital Community College says it will share a $1 million grant to launch a research project focused on bridging the computer-science gap among female and minority students.

Capital Community College will receive the National Science Foundation (NSF) grant in addition to Mass.-based Elms College, Minnesota’s The College of St. Scholastica and Southwest Minnesota State University.

The nationwide research project, titled “Collaborative Research: Broadening Participation and Building Pathways in Computer Science through Concurrent Enrollment,” aims to connect more underserved populations in kindergarten through grade 14 to computer science education.

As part of the program, a research team will examine the scope of those enrolled in computer science courses in high school, with an eye toward expanding programming to a larger, diverse group of students.

The research projects adds onto NSF’s Mobile CSP Project, an advanced placement (AP) introductory computer science curriculum created by Trinity College.
