The 468 megawatt Cape Wind farm off of Cape Cod in Massachusetts finished its federal permitting process this week with its final permits from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Cape Wind, which will be the largest offshore wind farm in the United States when complete, will sell most of its power to National Grid in Massachusetts, but Northeast Utilities might be compelled to buy some of the renewable energy after its merger with Boston-based NStar is complete.
With its 17 national and state permit now in place, Cape Wind needs to complete its project financing, something that would be helped with a power purchase agreement from NStar or Northeast Utilities..
“The receipt of Cape Wind’s last permit approval represents a decade’s effort of our company and 17 Federal and State agencies striving to harness America’s abundant, inexhaustible offshore wind resource that will contribute to increasing our nation’s energy independence,” Cape Wind President Jim Gordon said in a statement.
