East Hartford’s Pratt & Whitney Co. says Canada’s aviation overseer has certified its PurePower geared turbofan engine, paving way to power aloft a newly designed Canadian jetliner.
Pratt and plane-builder Bombardier Aerospace announced Wednesday that Transport Canada officially greenlighted the PW1500G for Bombardier’s CSeries aircraft.
The certification means Bombardier can begin test flights of its twin-engine, mid-range jetliner.
PurePower engines supplied to Bombardier are being assembled at Pratt & Whitney Canada’s Mirabel Aerospace Centre in Mirabel, Quebec.
Pratt spent 20 years and more than $1 billion to design, build and position its PurePower engine fleet as the 21st-century propulsion unit for civilian jetliners worldwide.
Pratt is a division of Hartford conglomerate United Technologies Corp.
