Cambria Hotel opens, readies for grand opening next month

The Christmas tree is up and the surfaces are gleaming at the new Cambria Hotel at 20 Dwight St., New Haven, as the property prepares for its grand opening on Dec. 15.

The newly-built, 130-room hotel had a soft opening in late September, and management has been meeting with Yale officials and others to promote the hotel, said acting General Manager Sam Carley.

“The brand awareness for the Cambria brand isn’t really out there yet,” Carley said, adding that the hotel offers an upscale ambience with an open-plan first floor that brings together lounge, study and dining spaces.

“We cater to everyone from business to leisure, essentially anybody who’s looking for a different atmosphere,” Carley said.

Yale groups have already begun booking at the hotel, which is close to parts of the campus and the hospital complex.

The Cambria’s onsite restaurant, 9 Squared, serves breakfast and dinner and plans to add more service as the hotel gears up, Carley added.

Construction began on the hotel last year, which is part of recent redevelopment along Route 34 that includes new retail, office and parking structures. Choice Hotels International paid $2.8 million for the 0.78 acre property at 20 Dwight in 2019.

Owned by N.Y.-based The LCP Group, the New Haven Cambria is operated by the Crescent Hotels & Resorts and was developed with HighSide Development, architect and interior designer Baskervill and construction manager KBE Building Corporation.

Cambria has been expanding in the state: The chain opened its second Connecticut hotel earlier this month near the Promenade Shops at Evergreen Walk in South Windsor. There are more than 60 Cambria hotels across the United States, with more than 70 under development, according to the company.
