Calif. asks Aetna, Anthem to halt rate hikes

California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones, who took office just last week, has asked Hartford managed care provider Aetna Inc., Anthem Blue Cross, and Pacificare to hold off for 60 days on raising rates beyond those in their most recent filings, The Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal reports.

The announcement came after Jones requested late last week that San Francisco’s Blue Shield of California delay increases of as much as 59 percent on some individual policies.

Anjanette Coplin, an Aetna spokeswoman, said the company has not yet received a letter from the California Department of Insurance, so it can’t comment. The newspaper said the other companies couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.
