Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation to help build three Hfd. parks

Construction on the first of three synthetic-surface playing fields started today in Hartford’s Clay-Arsenal neighborhood, Mayor Pedro E. Segarra’s office announced.

The city has partnered with the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation, which will develop baseball and softball programs at the fields when they are complete next year. The foundation is named after the late father of Cal Ripken Jr. Both men were professional baseball players.

The other fields, which are valued for the low maintenance they require, are planned for the Annie Fisher Montessori Magnet School and Hyland Park.

The city’s investment in the three parks has totaled $17.6 million since 2010.
