Bysiewicz urges paperless business registrations

Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz is urging passage of a bill that would require businesses and nonprofits registered in Connecticut to file their annual reports electronically to save taxpayers money.

The state’s chief business registrar went before the General Assembly this week to press for adoption of HB 5375, which would eliminate the need for her office to mail and collect paper documents.

The move, she says, would save taxpayers thousands of dollars annually in postage and paper, as well as streamline and improve customer service. It would also save at least two tons of paper her office generates and processes annually, Bysiewicz said.

“This is a step our office has wanted to take for some time,” she told lawmakers.

A similar version of this bill was passed unanimously by the General Assembly’s Judiciary Committee in 2009.  It later passed the House overwhelmingly but was not voted on in the Senate.
