Bristol attorney gets 3 years in charity theft

A Bristol-based attorney who was convicted of stealing charity funds to pay personal and law firm expenses was sentenced to three and half years in jail for the theft, the US attorney announced Monday.

Kevin E. Creed, 69, of Litchfield, who operated the Creed Law Firm in Bristol, was found guilty of diverting $1.4 million from a charity he founded to help house families at veterans’ hospitals.

Creed set up his charity in 2010 with the stated purpose of raising money to renovate a home in West Haven for veterans’ family members called a Fisher house. The attorney solicited donations for the Friends of Fisher House at fairs, carnivals and supermarkets and also took part in fundraising events including the Bristol half-marathon and a 10K foot race.

Only $1 million of $2.4 million raised went toward the Fisher House project. Prosecutors said that from 2012 to late 2018 or early 2019, Creed used his position to steal about $1.4 million in donations for personal use and law firm expenses.

Creed pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud in 2019 after an investigation by the FBI.

After he serves his jail time, Creed will serve three years of supervised release.
