Bridgewater’s first selectman is stepping down as the FBI investigates the town’s finances, the Associated Press reports.
First Selectman William Stuart, who has held his seat for 30 years, said Wednesday that he won’t seek another term in November and that he’s tired of political battles with former finance board Chairman George Allingham, the AP said.
Allingham is a former friend of Stuart who started raising questions in 2008 about Stuart’s handling of town finances, according to the AP, which wrote that the FBI seized records from town hall a year ago. The wire service also reported that state officials also are looking into Stuart’s management of the Burnham Fund, a charity for the needy. Stuart denies any wrongdoing.
