Bridgeport to pay $3.4M in fatal fire-truck crash

A Superior Court judge has ordered the city of Bridgeport to pay more than $3.4 million to the family of two women killed in 2007 when their car was struck by a city fire truck, The Associated Press reports.

The Connecticut Post reports that Judge Theodore Tyma found a city firefighter, David Otero, was negligent when drove through a red light on July 31, 2007 and struck the car carrying 76-year-old Essie Williams and her 58-year-old daughter, Gwendolyn Little.

Fire officials have said the car pulled out in front of the truck as it was responding to a call with its emergency lights and siren on.

But in the 18-page decision, Judge Tyma found that Otero failed to look for other vehicles as he accelerated through the intersection.
