Bridgeport school officials have confirmed that they’ve laid off 28 teachers and 21 other employees over the summer to cut costs, The Associated Press reports.
Officials in the state’s largest city tell the Connecticut Post that a total of 115 positions have been eliminated to balance the $215.8 million budget for the 2011-2012 school year, when counting retirements and vacant positions that will be left unfilled.
The eliminated positions include 15 business education teachers, five social workers, two physical education teachers, three family and consumer science teachers, seven technology education teachers, 13 literacy coaches and 10 administrators. Some teachers in those jobs have taken other positions in the district.
School officials, however, were able to add 30 new teachers needed for an autism spectrum program, speech and language pathology, Spanish and other areas.
