Bremby named DSS commissioner

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has named a former health and environmental official from Kansas to lead Connecticut’s state Department of Social Services.

Roderick Bremby, who served as secretary of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment for seven years, was named to his new position at a Tuesday morning press conference.

“DSS is an agency with a critical mission-having Rod’s leadership and experience will help us streamline the agency and provide services to the people who are depending on them the most,” said Gov. Dannel P. Malloy. “I’ve said over and over that we will not cut the safety net-and DSS and their partners are a lifeline for people in crisis. Rod has an extensive administrative skill set and the right mindset to make the changes needed to ensure we are making progress for Connecticut’s most vulnerable residents.”

Bremby was appointed to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment by former Gov. Kathleen Sebelius in 2003 and was the longest serving KDHE Cabinet Secretary in the state. There, he led a department with an annual operating budget in excess of $230 million and employed more than 1,015 full-time staff.
