The geothermal heating and cooling system at the new Branford Fire Department headquarters received a $101,500 rebate from the state Clean Energy Finance & Investment Authority.
The 31,000-square-foot, two-story facility has a 58-ton geothermal closed loop system designed to reduce energy costs by up to 25 percent. The system uses water-source heat pumps to extract heat from far underground, and in reverse for cooling.
The facility, designed by Hamden-based Silver/Petrucelli & Associates, also has solar panels to produce electricity and hot water for the facility.
Silver Petrucelli hopes to have the building receive the silver designation from the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, or LEED, program.
