Bradley International Airport: Rough Air

Greater Hartford’s airport lost and then won back Northwest Airlines’ popular daily flight between Bradley and Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam — Connecticut’s gateway to Europe and beyond. Devastating news of the grounding came in June, as oil prices were peaking at $147 a barrel. Then in December, when the economy was in tatters and oil prices had plunged below $50, Northwest surprised many by reversing course, saying the flight would resume five days a week, beginning in June 2009. Bradley marketing director Kiran Jain, a native of Kenya who had often relied on the Schiphol stopover to visit family in Nairobi, was widely credited with the success. Earlier in the year, Jeffrey Schultes took over as Bradley’s new administrator. He came from Portland International Jetport in Maine.
