B’port getting U.S. grant to create jobs

Officials from a handful of federal agencies will be in Bridgeport on Friday to announce a grant to aid Connecticut’s largest city in establishing training programs to put people to work.

Mayor Bill Finch and other local and state officials will join representatives from the federal departments of transportation, labor, Housing & Urban Development and the Environmental Protection Agency for the scheduled 10 a.m. announcement at the Bridgeport Housing Authority.

Further details on what exactly is being disclosed were not immediately available.

However, the announcement suggests that the agencies’ “significant funding” will involve training workers to handle environmental cleanup of various sites in the city, once the dominant manufacturing hub for Connecticut and New England.
