Boston energy nonprofit makes Hartford inroads

The nonprofit San Juan Center in Hartford has joined nearly 500 other companies that are part of a Boston-based energy purchasing consortium called PowerOptions.

The center operates computer literacy, housing and other programs for the city’s Latino population.

PowerOptions began expanding into Connecticut and Rhode Island nonprofits last year. PowerOptions now has five Connecticut members, a spokeswoman said Thursday.

The company, which is also a nonprofit, issues competitive RFPs for retail energy supply on behalf of its members.

PowerOptions said earlier this year that its members purchase approximately $200 million annually through its electricity and natural gas programs.
