BlumShapiro founder dies at 93

Julius “Yuddy” Shapiro, a founder of the firm that would become regional accounting and consulting power BlumShapiro, has died at the age of 93.

Shapiro began his accounting career in Hartford in the 1950s after graduating from Bentley College in 1939 with a degree in accounting. Shortly after he went into practice, he merged and formed Shapiro Rosenthal, with his long-time friend, Alfred Rosenthal. In 1980, BlumShapiro was formed when Shapiro Rosenthal merged with Blum, Gavens & Kaplan with a total of 30 partners and associates in one office in West Hartford. Shapiro was among the founders.

Today, the firm is the largest New England-based accounting, tax and business consulting firm with offices in West Hartford and Shelton, as well as offices in the Boston and Rockland, Mass., and Providence, with more than 340 partners and associates.

Shapiro died in Florida, where he resided with his wife Edith. He also leaves a son, Dr. Paul Shapiro (Joan), and daughter, Jayne Freiman (Mark), both of West Hartford; a daughter, Susan Rand (Dr. James) of Roslyn, NY, and six grandchildren.
