Blumenthal targets doctor scam

Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal says he has begun an investigation into a scam involving the sale of phony medical board certifications.

Blumenthal said today the scheme is targeting foreign-born or foreign-taught doctors who may not be aware of the proper certification process.

Board certification is not required to practice medicine, but it is a measure of expertise and quality in medical knowledge and specialties.

The attorney general says an out-of-state man with several aliases has been selling the bogus certifications to doctors in a variety of medical specialties for a substantial fee.
