Blumenthal: Stricter rules on wind farms

Before heading out the door to become Connecticut’s junior senator, outgoing Attorney General Richard Blumenthal called on the state to create tougher standards for the installation of wind farms.

The former attorney general met with citizens groups fighting proposals by West Hartford’s BNE Energy, Inc. to install 400-foot wind turbines in the hills of Colebrook, North Canaan and Prospect. Blumenthal also met with the president of Save Our Seashore, which opposes the major wind farm off the coast of Cape Cod in Massachusetts.

“Wind farms may have a place and purpose — but not at the cost of destroying pristine forests. These projects must be subject to scrutiny and sound standards,” Blumenthal said in a statement.

Under current state law, the wind turbine projects are subject to public hearings and approval from the Connecticut Siting Council, not from local zoning boards, as the citizens groups want.
