Blumenthal says he’s backing pension revocation bill

Attorney General Richard Blumenthal first called for revoking the pensions of corrupt politicians four years ago and now says he backs a bill that some lawmakers claim isn’t tough enough.

Blumenthal says the legislation backed by the Senate Democrats and Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell may not be retroactive and affect former Gov. John G. Rowland and others convicted of corruption-related charges.

But he says it’s important that Connecticut have a law on the books that revokes pensions and is urging lawmakers to pass the bill.

Both Blumenthal and Senate President Donald Williams defended how the pension revocation would work. Under the plan, an official’s pension could be reduced by the amount of fines, penalties, restitution and cost of prison the person was facing. The court would be able to look at each case individually.

Republican leaders say they want a pension to be revoked entirely if an official is convicted of corruption.
