Bloomfield’s AMC movie theater on Park Avenue in the Wintonberry Mall shopping center has shut down for good.
AMC Theaters’ website says the cinema — formally known as AMC Classic Bloomfield 8 — is “permanently closed,” and directs would-be customers to the nearest open AMC location, in Plainville.
Company officials have not said why the theater was shut down, but the COVID-19 pandemic, which kept cinemas closed for months, likely played a contributing role. The theater also had a somewhat mixed operational record even before the health crisis, changing hands multiple times over the course of its nearly 26-year run and struggling with a lack of investment.
On review websites, multiple guests complained the site was outdated and not properly cleaned, and said its ice machine for drinks was frequently broken. Still, others defended the theater as simply “old school,” with “no frills.”
The theater opened in 1996, under the management of Massachusetts-based Entertainment Cinemas.
According to news reports at the time, the location shut down between 2006 and 2008. It was eventually taken over by new owners, who carried out some cosmetic upgrades and reopened the theater to audiences.
