Bloom to unveil Cheshire fuel cell

California clean manufacturer Bloom Energy on Friday will unveil its 600 kilowatt fuel cell at the Macy’s Fulfillment Center in Cheshire.

The fuel cell will generate 5,000 megawatt hours annually for the facility and allow Macy’s to keep the center open in the event of a power outage.

Attendees at the 10 a.m. event Friday include Peter Longo, president of Macy’s logistics and operations; Bill Kurtz, chief financial officer at Bloom; and Bryan Garcia, president and chief executive of the Clean Energy Finance & Investment Authority.

Last year, Bloom won 12 of the 13 contracts in the first round of the state’s $300 million Low-emissions Renewable Energy Credit program, even though the program gave a competitive advantage to projects using products from FuelCell Energy in Danbury and ClearEdge Power in South Windsor.

The Macy’s Cheshire fuel cell was not among the projects that Bloom won, as that contract was signed with the retailer outside of the LREC program.
