Blockbuster eyes closing some CT outlets

At least three Connecticut Blockbuster Video stores are among some 145 nationwide that the bankrupt video-rental chain is proposing to close to save about $19 million in annual rent, according to real estate information service CoStar Group.

Blockbuster locations at 1095 Kennedy Road in Windsor; at 190 Columbus Blvd. in New Britain; and 266 East Main St. in Clinton are slated for closing if the chain obtains bankruptcy court approval to reject the leases, CoStar says in its Watch List report.

The Dallas chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Sept. 23, saying it plans to keep most of its 3,000 stores and kiosks open as it reorganizes.

It said in its filing it had about $1 billion in assets and $1.46 billion in debt.

The U.S. stores, DVD vending kiosks, by-mail and digital businesses will all continue to operate normally, the chain said. Operations outside the U.S. and domestic and international franchisees are not part of the Chapter 11 reorganization.
