Billed “affordable” military jet carries Kaman parts

A prototype light attack jet recently unveiled by Cessna parent Textron Inc. was built with components made by Bloomfield’s Kaman Corp., the company revealed Monday.

The Scorpion, which is billed as a more affordable military jet platform, was unveiled at an industry conference in September. Some analysts have estimated the cost per plane at between $17 million and $25 million.

Textron and its partner, AirLand Enterprises, hope the military will see the twin-jet aircraft as a solution for lower-threat battlefield and homeland security missions.

Kaman’s subsidiary, Kaman Composites, provided wing assembly, stabilizers, wing fuel access panels, main landing gear doors and other panels, Kaman said.

The Scorpion’s first flight is expected to take place before the end of the year.
