Big Y to close for two days to give employees a break

Local grocers and big chains have been dealing with a major surge of shoppers visiting stores and ordering online during the COVID-19 pandemic.

That’s why Big Y World Class Markets says it’s giving all its employees a break on Easter Sunday and Monday as it plans to close all of its stores, including the Table & Vine liquor stores.

Big Y Express Gas & Convenience locations will only be closed on Sunday.

“We want to thank all of our retail heroes,” Big Y Food Inc. CEO and President Charles D’Amour said in a statement. “We hope that this break will allow our employees to spend more time with their loved ones and give them a much-needed rest.”

Big Y says it’s also using the two-day break to restock and clean all stores before they reopen on Tuesday, April 14. Store hours will remain the same with 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. reserved for seniors and individuals with compromised immune systems and open to all customers from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Big Y has more than 30 locations in Connecticut, including in West Hartford, Rocky Hill, Avon, Manchester, East Windsor, Enfield, Cheshire and Meriden, according to its website.

Meantime, Stop & Shop and other grocers are deploying robots to clean floors, stock shelves and deliver groceries to shoppers to reduce pressure on store workers and increase efficiency.
