Big Y Hands Out $250,000 In College Scholarships

Big Y World Class Markets has selected more than 325 academically outstanding students to receive a total of more than $250,000 in college scholarships for the 2009-2010 academic year.

The awards are based on academic merit, regardless of financial need.

The students, from Massachusetts and Connecticut, will be attending schools such as Columbia University, Elms College, Yale University, Brown University, Smith College, Mount Holyoke College, Princeton University and Worcester Polytechnic Institute in the fall.

Top recipients were honored at a ceremony at the Big Y Store Support Center in Springfield, Massachusetts in May.

Since this program was founded in 1984, more than $2.2 million has been awarded to more than 3,000 students.

“We are grateful to be in a position to fill a real need in the communities we serve by recognizing the hard work, dedication to excellence and outstanding academic achievement of so many fine young men and women who are our neighbors in our marketing area,” said Donald H. D’Amour, Big Y chairman and CEO. “This exercise also serves as a humbling reminder to us all to continue to strive for excellence.”

The Children’s Museum has named the following as trustees: Richard L. Alleyne, assistant vice president and senior counsel at The Hartford; Rachel Bader, senior financial consultant for The Travelers Companies Inc. in Hartford; Veronica J. Lee, commercial real estate and corporate finance attorney with Pepe & Hazard LLP in Hartford; and, Mark D. Walker, vice president and regional branch manager for Windsor Federal Savings.

With a donation from The FSB Foundation of Farmington Savings Bank, the Bristol Adult Resource Center (BARC) Candy Kitchen will be completely renovated to include additional space, an energy efficient stove and refrigerator-freezer.

The Candy Kitchen is one of several employment opportunities for BARC participants. It makes candy, jams and relishes that are sold at farmer’s markets and the BARC Dining Room, as well as several other locations. They also specialize in event favors such as bridal/baby showers, weddings, and graduations.

The American School for the Deaf opened its new culinary arts center, which was made possible through a gift from The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving.

Other donors include: The John G. Martin Foundation, Henry E. Niles Foundation, the Rotary Club of West Hartford and KBE Building Corp. (formerly Konover Construction Co.).

This facility will afford ASD students the opportunity for a 21st century culinary arts education with state-of-the-art commercial grade kitchen facility. Students will also receive instruction in the essential business and technology components of the current food industry.
