According to Connecticut Better Business Bureau, in 2015 consumers nationally continued to file complaints about the same top 10 types of businesses as they have for several years in a row. But the number of complaints declined for most of those categories.
In 2015, the BBB received 198,444 complaints, down from 202,608 in 2014. Complaints break down this way by type of business:
- Cellular telephone service and supplies – 35,871;
- Telephone communications – 28,279;
- Auto dealers (new cars) – 26,464;
- Television (cable, CATV, satellite) – 26,051;
- Collection agencies – 19,803;
- Auto dealers (used cars) – 16,731;
- Furniture retail – 14,290;
- Banks – 10,995;
- Internet shopping – 10,331; and,
- Auto repair and service – 9,629.
The statistics show fluctuations in the number of complaints in 2015 among the top 10 types of businesses, according to a Better Business Bureau statement. Some drew fewer complaints, others received more, in some cases resulting in a change of their ranking.
In another analysis, the number of consumers making inquiries – researching a business, professional or charity through BBB – continued to rise in 2015. The most inquired-about businesses are contractors, in addition to auto dealers and collection agencies, both of which are among the most complained-about TOBs.
- Roofing contractors;
- General contractors;
- Auto dealers (used cars);
- Collections agencies;
- Plumbers;
- Construction and remodeling services;
- Auto repair and service;
- Heating and air conditioning;
- Home builders; and,
- Insurance companies
